Founded as the Fresno State Normal School in 1911, Fresno State serves nearly 24,140 students enrolled in more than 100 degree programs housed in eight colleges and schools. In the Senior year of the Fresno State Graphic Design BFA Program students will complete Professional Practices in Graphic Design, Graphic Portfolio Development, Independent Study in Graphic Design and the Internship in Graphic Design. The internship provides the opportunity to work for a publication, advertising agency or design studio under the supervision of Graphic Design faculty. Degree options include the BFA, MA, and MFA in Art with a Graphic & Interactive Design Concentration. Our facilities, faculty, and hands-on learning approach are designed to provide you with the tools you need to succeed as a professional in the world of fashion. The ability to take your designs and dreams to the runway that’s what the Academy’s School of Fashion graduates get to experience each spring and fall season as part of their final thesis projects. To shine a light on this thrilling story, we created a three-part video series to illustrate the path of a few of our fashion design school graduates. Over two full semesters, 23 students opened up to show us the design process from beginning to end, demonstrating the determination and intricate processes needed to transform their initial inspirations into the fashions of the future. Other program highlights include the opportunity to select concentration courses structured to address several career options within the discipline, internship opportunities, AIGA membership, and the Annual Visiting Artist & Scholar Lecture Series. Recent lecturers include Massimo Vignelli, Martin Venezky, Ben Fry, Nancy Skolos & Tom Wedell, James Victore, Andrew Blauvelt, Jim Sherraden of Hatch Showprint, Stuart Bailey, Jan Wilker, Cheryl Towler Weese, Hans Allemann, and Karen Cheng.

The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. Other course examples for the program include Social Design, Experimental Typography, Portfolio Workshop in Studio Arts, Graphic Design I-II, and Three-Dimensional Design.

Students in this degree track do not choose a concentration and take courses across disciplines including Web Design, Publication Design, and Visual Identity. A second BA in Graphic Design is available if a student has already earned a bachelor’s degree. The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (Cooper Union or CU) was founded in 1859 by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper. The school offers programs in the areas of Art, Architecture and Engineering, and courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences. With nearly 900 students enrolled, the school’s art students account for 32% of the student population.

Undergraduate students who “exemplify creativity, dedication, and professionalism in the Graphic Design Program” are selected to join the Design Center creative team each year. Graduates of the program are placed in positions in a variety of printing, packaging, publishing, imaging and related industries in management, marketing, sales, customer service, creative, technical, scientific, and academic positions.

To enhance the degree and develop skills in advertising or book arts, students may select electives from course clusters in these areas. Examples include Advertising Workshop, Copywriting, Bookmaking Projects, Ideation Bootcamp, On Screen Production & Concepts, Introduction to Letterpress, Bookstructures, and Advertising Design Studio. The average starting salary of students completing their game design studies with a bachelor's degree from the schools was $64,065 and master's degree $73,947.
Fashion Design Mastery
Other program features include small classes taught by recognized professionals in the field, the opportunity to create projects in areas such as branding, apps, web design, and packaging, and access to a designated senior studio outfitted with individual work spaces for digital and production work. The Cal Poly Graphic Design (Art and Design) BFA Program culminates with the Senior Portfolio Project course. Graduates have obtained positions in creative agencies, design studios, in-house creative departments, and in the tech and entertainment industries. Some program alumni have gone on to graduate school, while others have launched successful start-ups or freelance careers.
Graduates of the Cal State Fullerton Department of Visual Arts go on to enroll in graduate or doctoral programs at institutions such as Rutgers University, New York University (NYU), University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Parsons School of Design, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Students in both graduate programs will complete MA/MFA Project Development in Design. All UCLA DMA and Media Arts students have access to numerous labs, spaces, and other facilities.
California College of the Arts (CCA) was founded in 1907 by a German-born cabinetmaker with links to the Arts and Craft Movement. Today, the school is one of America’s top art and design colleges with 100 full-time and 400 part-time faculty members that serve 1,850 students from 42 states and 49 countries. Established in 1947 as Sacramento State College, California State University, Sacramento opened with 235 students. Today, Sacramento State serves more than 31,000 students making it the sixth largest of the 23-campus California State University System. With more than 115 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs, Sacramento State houses seven colleges including Arts and Letters; Business; Education; Engineering and Computer Science; Health and Human Services; Natural Sciences and Mathematics; and Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Michael Lamont Scarboro earned his undergraduate degree in architectural studies at Florida A&M University. She collaborates with philosophers around the world to concretize abstract thought into a tangible visual form. Graphic Design + Digital Media is a multidisciplinary program that covers print, advertising, web, 3D, motion, video, iPad development, package and action sport design. As a result, graduates of the program will have the skills needed to move seamlessly between print, web, motion and video. The major offers programs in Graphic Design, Graphic Design w/Illustration Emphasis and Graphic Design w/Action Sport Design Emphasis.
Program offerings for aspiring graphic designers include a BFA in Graphic Design (BFA GDES). Established in 1880, University of Southern California (USC) serves 47,500 students enrolled in more than 200 undergraduate programs, 300-plus graduate programs, and more than 150 minors. Program options for aspiring graphic designers are offered in the Roski School of Art and Design.
